چکیده

16 EC&M June 2003 I ndustrial and commercial customers constantly scrutinize their monthly electrical usage, looking for ways to save money. Installing power factor correction capacitors can reduce costly penalties imposed by the utility and help pay for the capacitors in a relatively short amount of time. The payback period can be as short as four to six months for capacitors installed on power systems in locations like hospitals and paper mills. However, you can’t indiscriminately add power factor correction capacitors to a system without understanding how their presence will affect the system. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) for motors, DC power supplies for computers, electronic ballasts for fluorescent lighting, and other non-linear loads can create harmonics. If you don’t consider the existence of these harmonic sources and the inductive reactance of the existing system, you’ll create the potential for harmonic resonance.

Modified Bi-directional AC/DC Power Converter with Power Factor Correction

Most existing power  converters and industrial motor drive systems draw non-sinusoidal currents from the supply. Non-sinusoidal currents contained harm harmonics disturb the power supply which it causes serious concern for reliability. Other equipments that use the same power supply are adversely affected. This paper suggests the operation and performance of a new modified AC/DC converter that ...

Solving Harmonic Resonance Problems on the Medium Voltage System

Harmonic problems are increasing on MV systems, especially with the application of power factor correction capacitors or extensive underground networks that resulting resonances close to the fifth harmonic. This paper describes two case studies of solving harmonic resonance problems on distribution systems with the design of harmonic filters that provide both power factor correction and harmoni...

Active Power Filter Design by a Novel Approach of Multi-Objective Optimization

This paper presents an innovative active power filter design method to simultaneously compensate the current harmonics and reactive power of a nonlinear load. The power filter integrates a passive power filter which is a RL low-pass filter placed in series with the load, and an active power filter which comprises an RL in series with an IGBT based voltage source converter. The filter is assumed...

A New Procedure for Determining Current Harmonic Contribution around an Operation Point at PCC Using Load Modelling Based on Crossed Frequency Admittance Matrix

Abstract:Today, one of the important issues of power quality (PQ) in power systems is the current harmonics. Increasing expansion of nonlinear loads at different parts of the electric network makes harmonic distortion flow through the network. This causes the network to have background voltage and current harmonic distortion and even affect on the PQ of linear load performance. Therefore, it is...

Recently, increasing of non-linear loads in the power distribution network has been increased harmonics in these networks. The harmonics problems get worse and complicated by installation of power factor correction capacitors and filters. But the Distributed Generations (DGs) interface inverters with properly control can help to improve power quality, harmonic compensation and voltage unbalance...
